Faculty of Attention Workshop
Spring 2014

The faculty of voluntarily bringing back a wandering attention, over and over again, is the very root of judgment, character and will. . . . An education which should improve this faculty would be the education par excellence."
~William James

Dear Colleagues: I am looking forward to our coming together to explore mindfulness.

We will be meeting from 3:30-5:00 in the Faculty Meeting Room.

While it is not necessary that you read anything or prepare in any way for our first meeting, you may find some of the below information on the benefits of mindfulness to be of interest.

Session One: Introduction, Science & Practice
Thursday February 13, 2014 (Group 1)
Wednesday February 19, 2014 (Group 2)

Today we developed a shared sense of what mindfulness is, of the science of mindfulness, and of two practices we will begin to bring into our day.

Session Two: Discussing and Deepening Practice
Wednesday February 27, 2014 (Group 2)
Thursday February 26, 2014 (Group 1)

Today we discussed our experience practicing mindful sitting and mindful walking--the challenges, what we noticed, and the benefits.

We explored bringing mindfulness into a familiar, yet often "mindless" event--eating, and the ways we can take note of the sensory experience.

We also considered the "time" we take to practice and its elusive nature.

We walked away with both a mindfulness cue (the dime/aspiration) and card to note our observations as we practice in the coming week.

Recording: The Wednesday Group discussed and practiced "Choiceless Awareness." You may visit this link and listen to the 5 minute "Choiceless Awareness" Practice (Recording No. 4).

Session Three: Embracing Uncertainty and Closing
Wednesday March 5, 2014 (Group 2)
Thursday March 6, 2014 (Group 1)
